Saint Jude Thaddeus:
By Debbie Thompson

(Patron of difficult or hopeless cases. Feast Day October 28)

St Jude is the nephew of Mary and Joseph; a blood relative of Jesus Christ. He was also one of the 12 Apostles, followers of Jesus Christ that traveled all over the world. Christ gave them instructions on where and how to teach the word of Christ to the people.  St. Jude made missionary journeys for many years converting vast numbers of people in Mesopotamia, Armenia, Persia, and possibly even Southern Russia. During his last journey in Armenia he was beaten to death with a club. Unfortunately, this was a country which did not completely convert to Christianity for another 250 years.  Today, St. Jude is still pictured with a club in memory of his martyrdom. A flame sometimes is shown hovering over his head which symbolizes the fact that he was one of the apostles who was gathered in the room when the Holy Spirit descended as a tongue of fire; the gift of tongues was given to the apostles at that time.

Devotion to St. Jude grew during this century. He had the largest following of a saint in the Catholic Church, other than the devotion to Mary, the mother of the Lord. Some say he was neglected because people confused him with Judas Iscariot, Christ’s betrayer. St. Bridget of Sweden even had a great devotion to him. In one of her visions the Lord told her to turn to St. Jude with a great deal of confidence, and that he will show himself most willing to give help.

In today’s time, we need him more than ever. Below is the prayer to St. Jude, known as the patron of difficult or hopeless cases. Say this prayer below when problems arise or when one seems to be deprived of all visible help, or for cases almost despaired of.

“Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of. Pray for me, I am so hopeless and alone. Make use I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly – (here make your request) and that I may praise God with you and all the elect forever. I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen”

In addition below is A Healing Prayer to St. Jude

“Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, friend of Jesus, I place myself in your care at this difficult time. Pray for me; help me know that I need not face my troubles alone. Please join me in my need, asking God to send me consolation in my sorrow, courage in my fear, and healing in the midst of my suffering. Ask our loving God to fill me with the grace to accept whatever may lie ahead for me and my loved ones, and to strengthen my faith in God’s healing power. Thank you, St. Jude, for the promise of hope you hold out to all who believe, and inspire me to give this gift of hope to others as it has been given to me. Amen.”
