The Sorrowful Mysteries

(step by step)

Said on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays of Lent.

Hold the cross in your hand and make the Sign of the Cross.

1) In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Now say the "Apostles Creed."

2) I believe in God, the Father Amighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

Hold the bead closest to the cross and say the "Our Father."

3) Our Father, Who art in heaven; hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

On the next three beads repeat the "Hail Mary."

4) Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

In the space after the last Hail Mary bead and before the next bead say the "Glory Be."

5) Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

On the next bead, announce the First Sorrowful Mystery. (The First Sorrowful Mystery is,) The Agony In The Garden.

6) Our Lord lead His disciples out of Jerusalem to Gethsemane, the olive tree grove where He spent so many nights in prayer. Agonized by the thought He was to suffer for the sin of man He prostrated Himself and prayed for strength to face the coming ordeal.

Now say the "Our Father."

Our Father, Who art in heaven; hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Proceed to the first set of ten beads. Say ten "Hail Mary’s," while meditating on the First Mystery.

7) Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

On the space after the set of ten Hail Mary beads and before the next bead say; "Glory Be."

8) Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Now say, "O My Jesus."

9) O my Jesus forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who most have need of Thy mercy. Amen.

10) Thinking to stop the blood lust of the mob Pilate ordered his soldiers to scourge Jesus. They stripped our Lord to the waist, tied Him to a low whipping pole and set to thrashing his body lashing His back with a whip.

Amen.

Proceed to the next set of ten beads. Say ten "Hail Mary’s," while meditating on the Second Mystery.

11) Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

17) O my Jesus forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who most have need of Thy mercy. Amen.

Announce the Fourth Sorrowful Mystery. (The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery is,) The Carrying Of The Cross.

18)) Our Lord was presented with the cross He was to carry to His place of execution. Meekly He shoulders the burden as He begins the terrible journey outside the west gate where He is to die. The cross cut into His shoulder, the mob jeered and derides. Each of a thousand step to Golgotha is a separate agony.

Amen.

As the soldiers began their terrible vigil every fiber in Christ's Body cried out for rest and relief. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

27) In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
