It is customary for devoted Catholic's to keep a water fount mounted on the wall next to the exit door of their home. Each time a family member leaves or enters the home they bless themselves both for a safe journey and in thanksgiving for a safe return. In most parishes near the entrance where we bless ourselves when entering the church is a large (usually medal) jug with a spicket . The practice goes that the faithful of the church can bring a Holy Water bottle or some other type of bottle and fill the bottle from the large medal jug that is full of Holy Water. This is the water that is taken home to fill the water font near our front door. We do recommended however that when taking water from the spicket in the church you do not bring a gallon jug of some kind but recommend bringing a jug that is just big enough to last at home for a week or two. This way there is water available for others who may always like to take it home for their fonts. Please also remember that even it it appears the water in the font is slightly dirty, you still use the Holy Water. Please never throw holy water down the drain.
